My submission for GMTK Gamejam 2025. I had 4 days to make this game with a musician friend. We made an old gameboy-ish game that would be played into a 3D console.
I tought of a game that would crash, and that you would start from scratch every time. Because it crashed, it made sense to turn off and on the console it's playing onto, since the game doesn't respond anymore. The lead to the game being gameboy-era (which also happens to be fairly fast to make).
The gameplay was originaly inspired by the indie game Minit. In minit tho, you have some save points that the game reload to after the current loop ended. I felt like it would take away part of the concept to add saves into the game. Because the game is retro, I tought of adding save codes instead (codes that the game gives you to spawn at a location you visited). It allows some progression, but not a full checkpoint that saves the state of the game. It also opens the door for some puzzle and hidden elements that would give away codes for later parts of the game.
With a retro game, a console and save codes, I thought it would be interesting to go all in on the nostalgia effect. So I focused on make the on/off button of the console feel real, added a logo of the console at the start, added a cartridge that you can examine etc.
Pending.
